From April to June 2023, I was in a process of researching and creating a dance solo about post-psychiatrization, a process that had begun in 2021 in an artistic residency. My two movement advisors who helped me tremendously in refining and clarifying my approach. Another axis of research and creation was to find a way to reproduce my heartbeats live as the sound for the piece, which my collaborator Fe Sexta did. They developed the device with stethoscope parts, wireless radio transmitters, specialized microphones, analog and digital consoles.
As happens when creating, my vision transformed and I want the final product to be a multimedia performance that includes dance, rather than a solo dance. Thanks to Fe’s work amplifying my heart rate, I now imagine lighting and visual effects in videos being influenced by heart rate. This would be possible with fairly simple coding between the audio, video and lighting systems. Hence, I’m starting to lean more towards digital arts for the rest of this project.
Unfortunately, I did not receive other funding to continue this project. I am forced to pause it, since producing the systems for the lighting, video and digital arts aspects involves costs that I cannot bear alone.
Another important difficulty during the development of the project was confronting myself with my psychiatric history (I was a psychiatric patient from the ages of 18 to 23, on medication for 4 and a half years, and it was a very horrible experience). I believed that this project would allow me a catharsis, as many of my other artistic processes have done. However, I faced the fact that these memories still hurt. I had to adapt my project to this reality to complete the research and creation without losing my health. For this reason, whenever I continue this project, I will not do it with the same approach.
